DAY 2 ON THE WATER

Just came back from visiting Marc and Rob at Jones Falls locks; thanks to my sister-in-law Diane for driving us out there.  We enjoyed a wonderful BBQ together and got caught up.  The boys made good time to Jones Falls today; they finished the 18 km leg around noon.  This gave them lots of time for lunch and to portage up the 60 ft vertical climb up the locks as there was a three hour wait to pass through the locks.  They were thankful to borrow a second kayak cart from the lockmaster to make the trek easier.  When Diane and I arrived this evening their camp was set up at the top of Jones Falls so they will be ready to hit the water first thing in the morning without needing time to go through the locks.

After last night's post, Marc called me to fill me in on yesterday's day on the water.  They spent about 8 hours on the water to get to Upper Brewers locks including portage time at Kingston Mills.  On route they met various folks that were open to hearing their story and what had brought them on their journey.  One Kingston businessman asked them for the blog address so he may send a donation.  Another man and his son gave him a donation at one of the locks.  Marc's back band snapped at one point and the generosity of one family allowed Marc to get off the water onto their property to fix it and they supplied him the necessary tools.  They also enjoyed the company of fellow kayakers while camping at Upper Brewers locks who were on the last part of their journey of a RETURN trip from Kingston to Ottawa.

Tomorrow's leg is to be another 18km to Newboro.
